Why is SF6 gas insulation only suitable for uniform electric field or slightly non-uniform electric field, not for extremely non-uniform electric field?

Some of the data obtained by SF6 gas insulation under a more uniform electric field are relatively accurate, and can be used as a reference in the study of new products. The conditions under non-uniform electric field are more complex and difficult to study. Generally, non-uniform electric field is not used.

Economically appropriate pressure range, or depending on your use of the environment, temperature, electrode spacing, voltage level to choose. High pressure equipment recommended 0.4--0.5MPa.

(1) In a highly uneven electric field, when the voltage applied is still far less than the breakdown voltage of the air gap, a stable partial discharge has occurred, which will cause SF6 gas to dissociate, and the dissociative products are very corrosive and have certain harm to insulation, which is not allowed.

(2) For general gases, the more uneven the electric field, the smaller the effect on increasing the air gap breakdown voltage, and the smaller the effect on SF6 gas, and in a certain pressure region, the relationship between the breakdown voltage of the air gap and the gas pressure has an abnormal low, which should be avoided.

(3) In a uniform electric field or slightly uneven electric field, when the maximum electric field strength in the air gap exceeds the electric strength of SF6 gas under the condition, as long as any local area of the air gap appears self-sustaining discharge, it will lead to the entire air gap breakdown, so the breakdown voltage of SF6 air gap is determined by the electric strength of SF6 gas under the condition.

In summary, SF6 gas insulation is only suitable for uniform electric fields or slightly non-uniform electric fields.
