Why is SF6 gas a high insulating strength gas medium?
(1) SF6 gas has a strong electronegativity.
(2) In gas discharge, the negative ions of SF6 gas play a role in hindering the formation of discharge.
(3) The large diameter of SF6 molecules makes the average free travel of electrons in SF6 gas relatively short, and it is not easy to accumulate energy in the electric field, thus reducing the collision ionization ability of electrons.
(4) The relative molecular mass of SF6 is 5 times that of air. SF6 ions move much less quickly in the electric field than oxygen and nitrogen, making the atoms in the gap more likely to recombine, resulting in fewer charged particles.
Under a uniform electric field, the insulation strength of SF6 gas is about 2.5 to 3 times that of air under the same pressure. At 3 atmospheres, the electric field strength of SF6 gas is equivalent to that of transformer oil. Therefore, SF6 gas is a gas medium with high insulation strength.
