According to the installation location of the circuit breaker, it can be divided into indoor and outdoor two kinds; According to the arc extinguishing medium used by the circuit breaker, it can be divided into the following types:

(1) Oil circuit breaker. The oil circuit breaker uses insulating oil as the extinguishing medium. Can be divided into multi-oil circuit breaker and low-oil circuit breaker. In the multi-oil circuit breaker, the oil is not only used as an arc extinguishing medium, but also as an insulating medium, so the amount of oil is large and the volume is large. In the low-oil circuit breaker, the oil is only used as the extinguishing medium, so the amount of oil is small and the volume is small, and the steel is used less.

(2) Air circuit breaker. The air circuit breaker uses compressed air as the arc extinguishing medium, which is fireproof, explosion-proof, non-toxic, non-corrosive and easy to use. The air circuit breaker belongs to the other type circuit breaker, which cools the arc by blowing the compressed air. When the arc reaches zero value, the ion in the arc path is blown away or compounded to realize the arc extinguishing. The air circuit breaker has strong breaking capacity and short breaking time, but the structure is complex, the process requirements are high, and the consumption of non-ferrous metals is high. Therefore, the air circuit breaker is generally used in the power system of 110KV and above.

(3) Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) circuit breaker. SF6 circuit breaker adopts SF6 gas with excellent arc extinguishing ability and insulation ability as the arc extinguishing medium, which has the advantages of strong breaking ability, fast action, small size, etc., but the metal consumption is more expensive. In recent years, SF6 circuit breakers have developed rapidly and have been widely used in high voltage and ultra-high voltage systems. Especially with SF6 circuit breaker as the main body of the closed combination electrical appliances, is an important development direction of high voltage and ultra-high voltage electrical appliances.

(4) Vacuum circuit breaker. The vacuum circuit breaker interrupts the arc in a high vacuum. An arc in a vacuum is formed in the metal vapor that evaporates from the electrodes when the contacts are separated. The ions and electrons in the arc rapidly spread out into the surrounding space. When the arc current reaches zero, the number of particles between the contacts that disappear due to diffusion exceeds the number generated, and the arc cannot be maintained and extinguished. The vacuum circuit breaker has strong breaking capacity, short breaking time, small size, small occupation area, no noise, no pollution, long life, can be frequently operated, and the maintenance cycle is long. Vacuum circuit breaker has been widely used in the power distribution system of our country.

In addition, there are magnetic blown circuit breakers and self-generated gas circuit breakers, which have the advantages of fire and explosion prevention, easy to use and so on. However, the general rated voltage is not high, the breaking capacity is not large, mainly used as a power distribution circuit breaker.
