Are there any breakdown products of insulating materials in the SF6 circuit breaker in normal operation? Under what circumstances are decomposition products produced?

The insulation materials in SF6 circuit breakers are SF6 gas, thermosetting epoxy resin (made of insulators and tie rods), polytetrafluoroethylene, etc. SF6 gas, thermosetting epoxy resin, polytetrafluoroethylene has good thermal stability, when the temperature exceeds 500 degrees Celsius will begin to decompose, 700 degrees Celsius will be obvious cracking. For the normal operation of the SF6 circuit breaker in the open, its internal temperature is not higher than 80 degrees Celsius, the insulation material will not decompose. In the opening and closing, although the high temperature arc above 2000 degrees Celsius is generated, so that SF6 generates charged ions and a small amount of decomposition products, but because of its opening and closing speed is extremely fast, and has efficient arc extinguishing function, charged ions are instantly combined into SF6, and its recombination rate is more than 99.9%. Therefore, in the normal opening and closing, SF6 gas and solid insulation material is not significantly decomposed, and a small amount of products are absorbed by the adsorbent placed on the top, so there is no or very little decomposition product of insulation material in the normal operation of SF6 circuit breaker.

When the SF6 circuit breaker has arc discharge, partial discharge, reignition and severe overheating failure, the solid insulation material and SF6 gas in the fault area will decompose and generate harmful low sulfur fluoride. When there is water and oxygen, it will further react with the electrode material and water starch to form a variety of compounds with complex components. The type and size of decomposition products are related to temperature, arc time, various impurities (such as water) and equipment structure and materials.
