Why recycle SF6 gas?

(1) SF6 gas has been widely used in the power industry because of its excellent insulation properties and arc extinguishing performance. The application of SF6 gas can not only improve the safety and reliability of power station operation, but also reduce the volume of electrical equipment, reduce the weight, reduce the cost, extend the life and maintenance cycle. However, SF6 gas will generate toxic and harmful substances under certain conditions, threatening the safety of personnel and equipment. SF6 gas will decompose when partial discharge, corona and spark discharge, and arc discharge occur in power equipment, and its decomposition will become corrosive electrolyte when it encounters water, especially some highly toxic decomposition. These toxic and harmful substances will cause harm to personal safety and pollute the environment.

(2) SF6 gas is also a greenhouse gas. In the Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, adopted in December 1997,SF6 gas was listed as one of the six greenhouse gases to be restricted. According to the Convention,SF6 has the second largest greenhouse effect, only second to CO2 in global warming.

In December 2007, China issued a white paper titled "China's Energy Situation and Policy," which solemnly pledged that China would fully control greenhouse gas emissions and strive to reduce fossil energy consumption. Actively carrying out SF6 gas recovery, treatment and reuse work is the power industry's positive response to the "China's Climate Change Program", is an important embodiment of conscientiously fulfilling corporate social responsibility, and serving the construction of a resource-conserving and environment-friendly society.

(3) Circular economy is a kind of resource efficiency and recycling as the core, to reduce, reuse, resource into the principle of low consumption, low emissions and high efficiency. The economic growth model with the basic characteristics is a fundamental reform of the extensive traditional growth mode of mass production, mass consumption and mass waste. The SFs gas recovery, treatment and reuse is in line with the national policy of recycling resources. As the SFs electrical equipment invested in the power grid enters the maintenance period, if the SF6 gas in these equipment can be gradually recovered, treated and reused, it will produce obvious environmental and social benefits, and at the same time, it can reduce the operation and maintenance costs of the power grid and achieve certain economic benefits.
