Is SF6 gas toxic?

发布时间:2020-02-06 来源:ydlcb 浏览次数:25次

Sulfur hexafluoride was a colorless, odorless, non-toxic, and non-flammable stable gas. Its molecular weight was 146.07. Its density was 6.1kg/m3 at 20℃ and 0.1 MPa, which was about 5 times the density of air. Sulfur hexafluoride is a gas at normal temperature and pressure, and its critical temperature is 45.6℃, the triple point temperature is -50.8℃, and the sublimation point temperature is -63.8℃ under normal pressure. Sulfur hexafluoride has octahedral configuration, small bonding distance and high bonding energy, so its stability is very high, and its compatibility with electrical structural materials and nitrogen is similar at temperatures not exceeding 180 ° C.

Although pure SF6 gas is non-toxic, it is necessary to prevent the concentration of SF6 gas in the workplace from rising to the level of oxygen deficiency. The density of SF6 gas is about five times that of air, and SF6 gas will be deposited in low-lying places, such as cable trenches, if there is a leak. If the concentration is too high, there will be a risk of suffocation, and this situation should be taken into account when designing indoor ventilation devices.

However, under the action of the arc, the decomposition of SF6 into some toxic and harmful substances, such as SF4, S2F2, SF2, SOF2, SO2F2, SOF4 and HF, etc., which have strong corrosion and toxicity.

Some toxic products produced by SF6 gas in electrical equipment during high-temperature arc action, such as thionyl fluoride, thionyl tetrafluoride, thionyl fluoride, and so on.

The SF6 gas decomposition in the electrical equipment reacts with the water in it to produce some toxic products, such as hydrofluoric acid and sulfur dioxide. SF6 gas and decomposition in electrical equipment react with insulating materials to produce some toxic products. Such as insulating parts with epoxy phenolic glass cloth plate (rod, tube) containing silicon components; Or epoxy resin castable parts, moulded parts and porcelain bottles, silicone rubber, silicone grease with quartz sand and glass as fillers play a chemical role to generate SiF4, Si (CH3) 2F2 and other products. It seems that one of the hazards of sulfur hexafluoride gas is that SF6 gas can react with other substances to produce toxic substances in some environments, causing harm to the human body and the environment. In addition, pure SF6 is non-corrosive, but its decomposition will become a corrosive electrolyte after water, which will cause damage to some materials inside the equipment and operation failure. Commonly used materials such as aluminum, steel, copper, brass are almost immune to erosion, but glass, porcelain, insulating paper and similar materials are vulnerable to damage, and are related to the content of corrosive substances.
